Commercial Bay wins big at AIA International Chapter Architecture Awards

Woods Bagot’s landmark Auckland project has been doubly recognised at this week’s 2022 International Chapter Awards of the Australian Institute of Architects.

A collaboration by Woods Bagot with Warren & Mahoney and NH Architecture, the project won the top prize in the Commercial Architecture category as well as received a commendation in the Urban Design category.

Punctuating Auckland’s skyline and the scale of a city block, Commercial Bay features a dynamic mix of overlooking balconies and bridges, forms and mixed massing that captures the essence of a city street. A careful curation of locally inspired materials and cultural motifs unifies and anchors it in Auckland.

As the Commercial Architecture Jury note: “The project is undoubtedly ambitious. Its unprecedented local scale and position has driven its architects to successfully address a plethora of complex, contextual and cultural conditions, whilst setting a world-class standard for major commercial architecture in New Zealand.”

This praise was added to by the Urban Design jury’s citation which describes the building’s “enrichment of the greater city context.”

“As a development which inadvertently impacts the city due to its scale, the architects of Commercial Bay were able to form their design around a nexus of historical city axes juxtaposed atop a major transport infrastructure node.”
