Suzhou Yanlord Cangjie’s dual triumph at MIPIM Asia

A significant achievement for Suzhou Yanlord Cangjie as it received the Silver Award for Best Retail Project at the prestigious 2024 MIPIM Asia Awards. In addition to this accolade, the project was also honored the Special Jury Award, recognising it as the Jury’s favourite among all entries.

“Seven years in the making, we are thrilled to receive this recognition, which reflects the hard work and dedication of our team and the unwavering support from our client, Yanlord Land Group Limited,” said Christopher Lye, Woods Bagot Principal, at the award ceremony in Hong Kong.

“At Suzhou Yanlord Cangjie, we champion innovation over replication; we think bigger than the plot; we consider how people will use the space for the next 5 to 10 years. Our aim is to craft spaces that encourage social interaction, exploration, and discovery, ultimately enhancing the city’s vibrancy and fostering a new urban community.”

Spanning 140,000 square meters, Suzhou Yanlord Cangjie is a transformative experiential retail and lifestyle centre that seamlessly integrates into Suzhou’s urban tapestry, serving as a nexus for the entire neighbourhood. This ambitious endeavour blends traditional and modern elements, creating a bridge between the ancient and the contemporary through various design motifs. Retail spaces are inspired by Suzhou’s old town’s paving stones, streets are designed to echo historic retail avenues, and a three-dimensional feature garden offers a fresh take on classical Chinese gardens. The project also embraces Suzhou’s ‘slow living’ ethos, providing spaces that encourage a leisurely pace and reward discovery.

“Retail streets woven with historic, cultural, and new elements create enjoyable spaces that transform shopping into an experiential, leisure-based activity,” Lye added. “By prioritising the experience of all users, Suzhou Yanlord Cangjie is designed to be a place that encourages social interaction, exploration, and discovery.”

The market has responded to Cangjie’s success. With over 200 brands, 70% of which are making their debut in Suzhou or even in China, Suzhou Yanlord Cangjie attracts international brands such as Maison Margiela, JIL SANDER, and Diesel, as well as emerging local talents. The project also hosts various art and cultural events, including public installations, live music, and outdoor activities, fostering a new urban community. Millions of visitors are drawn to experience a vibrant yet relaxed lifestyle in this historic city.
