In the heart of Queensland’s historic business district, the Woods Bagot Brisbane studio is located in the Woods Bagot-designed Heritage Lanes on 80 Ann St. With a 6 Star Green Star rating, the net-zero project is an exemplar in achieving ‘breathable’ design with indigenous public art.
We’d like to introduce Sarah Kennedy from the Brisbane studio, who is passionate about the integration of art and architecture in design. In this Q&A with Sarah, she shares that the program “has encouraged me to interrogate the role we, as designers, can play in delivering high-quality design.”
Sarah brings a local and fresh lens to the studio so if you’re considering the program and aspiring to join a global studio, we invite you to hear from our fellow graduate candidate.

What do you enjoy most about the Graduate program at Woods Bagot so far?
I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to further develop my skills in a supportive environment, working alongside a team of incredibly talented designers. I’ve loved the chance to contribute across multiple sectors, project phases, and scales. The W-B graduate program has encouraged me to critically examine the role we, as designers, play in delivering high-quality, design-centered outcomes for both the client and the end user. I feel that each day brings something new, and there is always more to learn.
How has it been working with your mentors and team?
Working with project leaders like David Lee, Chris Field, and Ama Adikari has been invaluable and incredibly rewarding. Their extensive industry experience and passion for the built environment are inspiring and have provided valuable guidance through complex challenges. They have fostered a supportive and collaborative environment where you’re encouraged to ask questions, step outside your comfort zone, and work as a team towards a shared goal.
We invited the graduates to share insights into their final projects, giving us a glimpse into their innovative approaches, creative problem-solving, and the unique perspectives that set them apart in the field of design.
Tasked with redesigning the School of Architecture and Built Environment at (QUT), the proposed design aims to create a meaningful and welcoming space for innovation, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge for all community members. Through architectural intent, critical analysis of existing educational pedagogies, and thoughtful consideration of the varying needs of students, staff, and the wider community, the new development provides a safe, equitable, and engaging environment with learning spaces suited to every type of student. Architectural elements such as flexible learning areas, a strongly expressed planted datum, a sweeping screened facade, and focused vistas, combined with materiality drawn from the QUT Campus to Country guidelines, create a strong connection to the site’s South East Queensland context. Though composed of a variety of flexible, moving parts, the goal for the new ABE/Aerovate facility is simple: to create a space that feels welcoming and enjoyable for all who enter—a space for connection, community, and collaboration.

What have you learned from working on your project or program?
Working on a fast-paced mixed-use commercial and retail precinct has taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of coordination, communication, and professional practice. I’ve also gained hands-on experience using the W-B environmental assessment tools, which has deepened my understanding of the environmental impact of design choices and how to make more sustainable decisions. This experience has not only expanded my technical abilities but also strengthened my commitment to delivering thoughtful, responsible design solutions.
At Woods Bagot, we are committed to creating an environment where difference is celebrated, valued and respected, practices are equitable, and our people feel like they belong. We accept that none of us is smarter than all of us. We believe building a diverse workforce is the foundation to creativity and innovative design – it is only by working together that we can realise the potential of our people, clients and communities around us. Through our inclusive leadership and our truly global studio network of strategists, experience designers and scientists, you will find your voice and have the support and flexibility required to bring your whole self to work and build an exceptional career.
