The Australian Bragg Centre (ABC), a Woods Bagot-designed clinical treatment facility within Adelaide’s Biomed City, has reached practical completion.
Under construction from June 2020, the purpose-built biomedical development will house Australasia’s first clinical proton therapy unit within its three subterranean levels.
The building reached its full height of 74 metres in April, covering 32,000 square metres of floor space across 15 levels: the upper levels hosting dry lab research spaces, which will accommodate third-party research, clinical and commercial tenants; the ground floor featuring a clinic and reception; and the clinical proton therapy levels.
Woods Bagot Director Thomas Masullo said the ABC’s ground plane employs the principles of ‘prospect’ and ‘refuge’ theory, creating opportunities for connection, inspiration, and private withdrawal in turn, to support the comfort of the users in the space.
“Through the forecourt and arrival space, we have created moments that encourage public interaction and promote a sense of transparency and openness, as well as articulate internal spaces that offer moments for intimate refuge,” says Masullo.
The ground floor plaza serves as the first point of contact with the building. It also operates as a mediator level, facilitating access to both the proton therapy levels and the commercial tenancies above.
Interior designer Hayley Packer says the ground-floor health facility component will be used equally by adults and children, and as such, the design has been considered to cater for all patients.
“We have found a balance between sophisticated, timeless design with elements of fun and play,” says Packer.
“Dedicated zones for children have been developed such as a ‘slouch zone’ for adolescents along with a ‘play area’ and dedicated ‘play therapy room’ for younger children.”
Clear, intuitive wayfinding has been deployed throughout the building, enabling easy navigation through interior design and a dedicated signage strategy. Natural materials feature heavily throughout, including timber cladding and polished concrete tile, while internal plantings and abundant natural light providing biophilic connections for patient wellbeing.
“The soft palette and honest materials create a sense of calm in entering the double-heighted lobby space,” says Packer. “Organic forms like the curvaceous internal stairwell and naturally lit interior spaces have been considered to reduce patient stress and promote wellbeing.
“ABC marks the completion of a much broader vision,” says Masullo. “It’s the final puzzle piece within a wider innovation hub, bolstering Adelaide’s leadership in word-class health research and care.”
Dexus Healthcare Property Fund Manager Jemma Maddick said the Australian Bragg Centre is an “exceptional asset within our fund, supporting the delivery of essential health services to our communities”.
Commercial and General Executive Chairman Jamie McClurg added, “This iconic piece of health infrastructure was delivered through COVID, and its completion is a testament to the resilience and commitment of all project partners.”
