Haikou Jiangdong Tiandi Mixed-Use Project Hits Structural Summit

The Woods Bagot designed Haikou Jiangdong Tiandi Mixed-Use project has recently achieved its structural peak, marking a significant step forward in the development of Hainan’s urban landscape. This project, led by Woods Bagot in collaboration with CBRE Beijing and CAPOL International & Associates Group Shenzhen, emerged as the top winner among 14 consortia comprising 42 international architectural design and commercial planning companies.

Spanning an impressive 130,000 square meters, Haikou Jiangdong Tiandi is envisioned as an urban complex that seamlessly blends creative office spaces, ecological commerce, coastal entertainment, and art exhibitions. This urban tapestry is set to lead the innovation and growth of Hainan Free Trade Port.

“We aimed to craft not just buildings, but a narrative that invites people to engage with the architecture and the community it serves,” Christopher Lye, Principal at Woods Bagot, articulates the project’s core philosophy. This narrative is brought to life through the strategic integration of economic, natural, and futuristic elements, creating a “three zones, one center” concept that benchmarks the development against the world’s leading mixed-use projects.

The design features a central axis space that connects the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) with the coastal public realm, leading to Jiangdong Seaside Park and immersing visitors in the tropical essence of Hainan. Lye continues, “Our design philosophy was to weave together the economic vitality of the free trade circle, the tranquility of urban nature, the vibrancy of future living, and the connectivity of a transportation hub.”

Each plot within the development boasts distinctive features, with six key facades that incorporate elements of nature, technology, entertainment, gourmet food, and duty-free offerings. These elements coalesce to create captivating “check-in spots,” fostering a sense of place that resonates with both locals and visitors.

The project is expected to be completed by 2025, set to become a new commercial powerhouse for Haikou and a beacon of Hainan’s economic aspirations. Lye reflects on the project’s broader impact: “The Haikou Jiangdong Tiandi project is designed to be a living, breathing entity that evolves with its surroundings, offering a glimpse into the future of urban living.”
