Drawing on the legacy of cross-country rail, the carriages reference the nostalgia and romance long associated with train travel.

The interior design incorporates Australian architectural motifs and residential details from the arts-and-crafts movement. The Premium carriages draw inspiration from the Federation-style homes of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries: a uniquely Australian expression of the English Edwardian home that blends European influences with antipodean sensibility.

The residential character and human-scale detailing of the carriages is designed to create an elevated familiarity, evoking a sense of exclusivity and refined comfort. A rich and layered design is expressed through bespoke detailing, decorative timber accents, stone masonry, iron filigree, and coved ceilings that reference traditional cornices.

The design emphasises the authenticity, heritage, functionality and connection to the outback that has come to characterise Australian refinement.

“’Australian luxury’ is defined by an understated aesthetic with bucolic sensibility and an adventurous spirit,” says Woods Bagot Principal Rosina Di Maria. “In place of extravagant decoration and excessive opulence, Australian luxury is characterised by quiet confidence, quality, comfort, and attention to detail.

“The interiors are characterised by an artisanal, heritage-driven approach to detail, meticulous craftsmanship, and the widespread use of high-end materials.”

Craftsmanship is celebrated in bespoke joinery, tailored cabinetry hardware, and custom light fittings by Australian industrial designer Volker Haug. Materials are used in their most honest and authentic expressions, with interiors featuring a palette of herringbone parquetry, natural stone surfaces, walnut wall cladding, wool carpets, fluted glass dividers, and saddle leather details.  

The interior design narrative references moments in Australia’s pastoral history, acknowledging the role of wool and leather merchants in establishing Australia’s economic resilience. This story is evidenced in the use of sheepskin and hide throughout the suites, and subtle design details like horsebit curtain tieback and pleated leather-trim curtains.   

Woods Bagot designers have increased connection to the landscape by introducing additional picture windows, creating new opportunities to frame the extraordinary scenery along the train journeys, from the epic expanse of the Red Centre to the rolling hills of the Barossa Valley.

The tones of the outback are expertly worked into the schemes of the new sleeper suites. The Aurora draws from the celestial skyscape of the outback, from the shimmering lights of the southern skies to the dreamlike tones of the Australian aurora, while the Australis Suite incorporates a material palette inspired by the terra.

In the Aurora, mirrored surfaces, champagne steel and high-gloss finishes play with light and ephemera, referencing the shifting astronomical canvas of the Australian desert. Celestial green tones of the Southern Lights are incorporated in emerald quartzite and velvet upholstery.

As the most luxurious suite in Australian train travel, the Australis scheme inclines towards earthy tones, rich tans and ochres, with stained timber and red-veined stone.
