Reconfiguring the Envelope for Pedestrian Permeability
Gateway Sydney is a vibrant three-level dining precinct situated within the reconfigured architectural envelope of Gateway Plaza at Sydney’s Circular Quay. The retail mix and planning connects and activates the precinct to the streetscape via laneways and voids, redefining the location as a dynamic food hub and lifestyle destination.
Talk to Billy Ip about Retail
Upgrading the existing tower podium to create a new civic address, the project represents a contemporary architectural addition to the city, reinvigorating the public amenity in the area. Comprising retail, public space and corporate office tenancies, the redevelopment of the waterfront destination has delivered a revitalized urban precinct for Sydney.
The design fully realizes the retail potential of the site, with a doubling of retail area capturing the maximum retail frontage within the space, while creating a journey of discovery for the customer. Activated street frontages has improved the amenity of the podium on all three street frontages, opening up and connecting the building to its surrounds.
The existing Gateway tower is a strong marker on the city’s skyline. A highly reflective blue glass curtain wall dominates the tower facade, interrupted at the tower’s corners by a shard of granite, running at a vertical plane down the form of the building.
At the podium level, the design introduces a pleated glass system framed in a bronze-colored aluminum plate to detail the facade. The glass panels comprise a variety of fixed glazing and operable guillotine windows, creating a sense of dynamism to the scheme. The folded geometric form creates a simple yet distinctive architectural detail at the human scale.
Supporting the growth of a vibrant, safe and diverse night time economy, the precinct has been designed to enhance Sydney’s standing as a global city, contributing to making the city a safe and inviting place to live, work and play.
